Περιγραφή

Cape Sounio is an hour’s drive from the Athenian Riviera, along the cosmopolitan coastline with luxurious villas of the affluent suburbs. The private tour to Cape Sounio starts with a pleasing drive along the scenic coastal road past the stunning suburbs of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni & Varkiza. Enjoy a comfortable ride appreciating a splendid view of the Saronic Gulfcoastline stretching from the southern suburbs to Cape Sounio. Reaching your destination, Cape Sounion, you see the famous 5th-Century BC Temple of Poseidon, built entirely of white marble to honor Poseidon, god of the sea. The Temple of Poseidon was erected between 444 BC and 440 BC, during the Golden Age of Pericles, on a clifftop of the cape with waves crashing on all three sides. The Temple of Poseidon is a magnificent example of ancient Greek architecture, built in the Doric style. The Poseidon Temple is assumed to be part of a sacred triangle with the Parthenon in Acropolis and the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina.Cape Sounion was walled to protect and safeguard the Athenians’ naval interests. Many myths and legends from ancient Greek mythology are associated with this temple. According to Greek mythology, Cape Sounion was the place where Aegeus, the king of Athens, tragically took his own life by jumping off the cliffs, in the belief his son Theseus was dead. So, the Aegean Sea was named after him to his honor.
