We drive past the historical city of Thebes and the picturesque town of Leivadia. Continuing our journey through the mountainous roads, we reach Arachova. This picturesque village, perched on the slope of Mt. Parnasos, is a famous winter resort but attracts visitors all year round. Leaving Arachova after a short drive, we are at the “Heart of the Earth,” the Delphi Oracle, the ancient Greeks’ cultural and religious center. Going past the Castalia Spring, we come to the focal attraction, The Oracle. The Temple of Apollo is the sacred place where world leaders would come to consult the priestess Pythia and listen to her prophecies. Other attractions include the Stadium for the Pythian Games and buildings, and monuments dedicated to Apollo, the Treasuries, the Athenian Stoa, the Sibyl Rock, the Theatre, the Tholos, the Gymnasium and the Hippodrome. The Archeological Museum of Delphi houses a rich collection of sculptures and statues of ancestry. We stop at a local tavern for a traditional Greek lunch and continue our journey to Kalampaka. The town is on the foot of Meteora Rocks. Here, we spend the night, you can explore the town, shop, dine, and admire the impressive Meteora Rocks in the distance. On the second day, after a hearty breakfast, we checked out and set off to Meteora. It is a geological wonder, the huge, steep rocky mountain scraping the sky. On its cliff tops, monasteries were miraculously built. It’s beyond our imagination how they carried the materials to construct the imposing buildings and churches.

Every mile along the journey opens a new chapter in history. On the tour from Athens to Mycenae, you’ll pass over the impressive Corinth Canal. Mycenae Palace is a citadel with the remains of a palace at the top. Lion Gate Mycenae givesaccess to the fortified part of Mycenae. This is the most emblematical part of the site.The two lions facing each other and the Cyclopean stonework are remarkable. The Cistern Passage is a tunnel to an underground cistern, where the Mycenae stored their water supply.

While staying in Athens, it’s worth going on a day trip to Delphi and the surrounding areas. The journey starts early in the morning because it is a long drive north, with some stopovers along the way. The tour starts from your hotel or from the place you have chosen. The first stop is Thebes, the largest city of Boeotia. If time is no issue, you can visit the archaeological museum and scattered ancient remains. The next place worth visiting is Livadia. It is a small picturesque town, a perfect place to stop for refreshments. Livadeia is not a tourist spot, but a river runs through the city, and you can walk under the shady trees on cobbled paths, admire the waterfalls and watermills, or enjoy good food under the shade of the plane trees. Continuing on your way to Mt. Parnassos and the site of Delphi, you can make a short detour passing the village Distomo, the road leads you to the impressive Monastery of Ossios Loukas, still functioning today. Osios Loukas is surrounded by spectacular natural beauty. You can visit the two magnificent Byzantine churches to admire the frescoes and mosaics. Finally, we continue a few more kilometers through the windy roads of Mt. Parnassos to reach our destination, the ancient site of Delphi.
